What is directional drilling?

Directional drilling, commonly referred to as horizontal directional drilling (HDD), is the ability to maneuver a rod under the ground and direct it around or under obstacles.

Directional drilling is used when trenching or excavating is not practical and minimizes environmental disruption. Directional Drilling is the preferred method of installing pipes into the ground. This type of drilling causes the least amount of environmental disturbance possible and allows you to reach areas which otherwise would be too difficult to access.

Drilling happens in three stages. The first stage requires drilling of a pilot hole on the designed path. The second stage enlarges the hole through the use of a larger cutting took known as the back reamer. The third stage places the product or pipe in the enlarged hole. Directional control capabilities assist the rig operator in making necessary changes in the directions of the drilling head.

HDD is done with the help of drilling fluid (mud) with a few machines designed to use air or air and foam. Air and foam machines are used for rock. Drilling fluid is a mixture of water and, usually, bentonite clay, with additives used to improve performance. It is continuously pumped to the cutting head or drill bit to facilitate the removal of cuttings, stabilize the bore hole, cool the cutting head, and lubricate the passage of the product pipe.
